When it comes to interior design, it’s always best to go with what we like. That’s especially true when it comes to choosing wall colors. After all, we have to live with those shades every single day, so why not choose something we actually enjoy.
However, there are a few factors that we should also consider. For example, I am a huge fan of lime green. I think it’s a fantastic color, and it brings me joy every time I see it. However, I’m not going to paint my bedroom walls in a neon lime green shade, no matter how much I like it. The reason for that is simple – wall colors can affect moods.
It might seem far-fetched to some, but wall colors do matter. Of course, you won’t be perpetually calm just because you paint your office a calming shade of powder blue. You also won’t magically fall into a deep sleep just because your bedroom walls are the perfect deep purple shade. But, let’s be honest – would you feel calm in a room that has bright red or dark black walls? The answer is probably – no.
How colors affect our mood
Colors are powerful tools. We can use them for communication, to convey our thoughts and desires. Furthermore, they can also affect not only our mood but our reactions as well. Thus, it seems crucial that we make the right choice when picking wall colors. Here’s how different colors affect us.
Most people who shy away from bright or deep colors prefer neutral tones for their homes. But, neutral colors can be a slippery slope as well. You might think that you can’t go wrong with white walls. However, if the white is too stark, especially in a well-lit room, it may make you feel anxious.
Other neutral colors might bring you more serenity. Light or deep brown is a perfect choice for the bedroom. Those natural shades can make us feel relaxed. However, don’t go too dark, as you might start to feel as if the walls are closing in on you.
Bright colors, as long as they aren’t neon, can make us feel energized. So, they are a good choice for a kid’s playroom or an office. Warm shades of yellow and red make the room seem cozy and inviting. Yellow is also a perfect choice for a kitchen, as some say it can increase the appetite.
I’m a fan of bright colors, but bright, saturated walls in red and yellow shades are far from ideal. That kind of an assault on the senses can cause stress and even headaches.
Cooler tones of deep blue or forest green create a peaceful atmosphere. They can also be stimulating for the mind, which makes them ideal for study rooms or art studios. However, dark colors that are very saturated shouldn’t be used in small spaces. Furthermore, stay away from painting the entire room in a dark color. That can evoke feelings of depression. Imagine an all-black room? It sounds edgy in theory, but it’s actually kind of bleak.
It’s essential that we make our working and living space as pleasant as possible. After all, we have to spend a lot of time there, and smart use of wall colors can quickly turn any space into our favorite place on Earth.
